What is the difference between .xmp and .lrtemplates files?

With the latest updates of Adobe Lightroom, Adobe has moved on from the .lrtemplate file format in favor of using the .xmp format. But both formats still works perfectly with Adobe Lightroom 4, 5, 6, and Classic CC.
